LEGENDARY QUESNEL LAKE RAINBOWS

BIG, BIG TROUT!

Experience the unique trout fishing at Quesnel Lake! You can troll, bucktail, or cast your favourite fly. Then, fish the drop-offs, bays and creek mouths in pursuit of a strain of monster Rainbow Trout or go deeper for some hefty Lake Trout.

Quesnel Lake Fishing Info

Forged by glaciers, Quesnel Lake is the deepest freshwater fjord in the world (over 2000 feet deep). With over 360 miles (600 kms) of shoreline, it reaches 80 miles East to West and 23 miles up the North Arm. As a result, this huge lake is fed by numerous creeks and two major rivers. This is the nursery for the offspring of millions of Sockeye salmon that comprise one of BC’s largest salmon runs. All of these elements provide the ingredients for truly spectacular trout fishing. You’ll be stalking a genetically pure strain of very large, slow maturing trout.

Quesnel Lake is one of only a few large lakes in North America where trophy-sized rainbow trout can be caught in an uncrowded wilderness setting. Unlike most other strains of trout in North America, adult rainbow from Quesnel Lake grow to be generally large (10 – 20 lbs). On the average, they are 7 years old when they spawn for the first time (other trout start spawning at age 3 or 4).

Rainbows are the primary target, but Bull Trout, Lake Trout, Kokanee and White Fish are also in abundance. Spin casting and trolling are other popular angling methods on Quesnel Lake.

YOUR CHOICE OF

WILDERNESS RIVERS

Fish your choice of world class rivers and streams for wild Rainbows and Bull trout! Catch one of the prolific insect hatches, drift fish or wade. Or for something incredible, fish during the autumn salmon runs when the big monster trout come into the rivers to gorge on the eggs.

River Fishing Info

The Quesnel Lake eco-system boasts four incredible wilderness salmon rivers, including two of BC’s premier trophy trout fishing streams. We can book guided day-trips or you can set out on your own. But, the guides at Elysia Resort know these rivers well and they will put you in the best possible position to catch fish. Our favorite rivers to fish are the Horsefly River by drift boat, and the Mitchell River, Cariboo River and Quesnel River by Jet Boat. Inquire about our guiding services.

Our river season starts in mid July and lasts through September. Large Quesnel Lake rainbows will be present waiting for the huge returning runs of sockeye salmon. July can deliver outstanding dry fly action for these big ‘bows with caddis and hopper imitations. By late August these waters are alive with spawning salmon.

Rainbows appear in ever increasing numbers, feasting on the nymphs freed from the river bottom by salmon building of redds. You’ll alos find them gorging themselves on salmon eggs and eventually decaying salmon flesh. For the fly fisher, fall is the best chance to catch a trophy rainbow in one of our pristine rivers.

AGGRESSIVE BC RAINBOW TROUT

STILLWATER FLYFISHING

Cast a fly to aggressive, wild BC rainbow trout in a secluded wilderness lake. The many smaller lakes surrounding Quesnel Lake offer unparallelled stillwater flyfishing. The shoals are alive with aquatic life. Catch a mayfly, sedge or chironomid hatch for exciting dry fly trout fishing action or cast a sinking line into the crystal clear waters with a pupa, dragonfly or leech pattern. Be sure to bring your camera and pack a lunch. There’s a fishing adventure for everyone.

Stillwater Fishing Info

For fly fishing enthusiasts, great fly fishing is not limited to just the lake and feeder creeks. Numerous small and intimate stillwaters, some trophy lakes, abound in the region, many less than a half hour from Elysia Resort. These wilderness waters are teeming with fiesty wild rainbow trout. Having seen few people, these trout feed confidently on scuds, leeches, chironomids, caddis flies, mayflies, damselflies, dragonflies and corixa. So, expect unmatched trout fishing action both on the surface with a dry fly and below with nymphs.
